Quality of Carpets : The quality of a Carpet or rug is primarily determined by the quality of material used, e.g. quality of silk, wool or other materials used in making of a carpet or rug. Another factor is the number of knots per square inch. The number of knots can vary from 144 to 1600. This is like pixels displayed on a Computer monitor. More pixels translate into a finer and more compact picture.
Carpet Weaving : The size of the loom varies according to the dimension of the carpet or rug. The basic fabric of the rug is woven by tying rows of knots between adjacent warp threads. The knots are tied on upright wooden looms. This gives a nap to the pile of carpets or rugs. The warp is mounted on the upper beam and the woven (now hand knotted). Fabric is wound to the lower beam. This eliminates the need to have high ceilings and makes common houses suitable to carpet weaving.
Warp weaves vertically and forms the base of the carpet or rug. Weft weaves horizontally and knothing forms the intricate design of the carpet or rug. The carpet weaving industry is spread all over and spills to all sectors of industry. It is a cottage industry on one side and a multinational on the other.
